The contemplative space of the open road has created tension for me. The silence was something that I didn't see as necessary as I do now. Once the connectivity of Bluetooth invaded my life I could stay connected or venture down the "Information Super Highway" along with getting efficiently from point A to point B. With audio books and the ability to explore the many musical playlists of my life I was reprogramming myself. One of the books that allowed me to see it was a book titled "The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains". I actually had to read the book as opposed to listening. Currently all versions "books" are published simultaneously. The book was compelling and for me a diagnostic tool. I had noticed that my attention span was changing.
Interviewed Nicholas Carr, the author of, "The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains," about how the Internet is influencing us, our creativity, our thought processes, our ideas, and how we think. (4 minutes)
Researching and exploring is something that motivates me but the dark side are the distractions. Notice the rise in ADHD, pharmaceuticals, and practitioners to treat this phenomenon. As a content creator I did like the challenge of getting your ideas communicated in the two minute window attention span. Just think of the Memes that have become such an art form. One of my friends sons sees it as a vocational path and it truly is.
My affliction to shiny objects, technology, and being on the early timeline of the emergence of these new tools allows me to see the light and darkness a little differently. I don't have to keep writing to explain these manifestations I just have to go to YouTube and I can find the most compelling ideas and video content to illuminate the dark side. As a culture we are all experiencing the chaos of the lack of silence in our learning. It is the illusion of freedom. It's easy to sacrifice the energy and physicality of thinking and putting fonts to the page. I still love to write in cursive but now efficiency has invaded. The simplicity of truth, beauty, and goodness expressed in the fonts of the Internet dims the light of creation to what level? The cost of this transaction seems to be rapidly materializing. It's an exciting time for those of us who love exploring the curvy paths of life. The long form podcasts are feeding the disconnect we feel from "The Innovation of Loneliness". (4 minutes)
